Leon Wilkeson was an American musician who was best known as the bass guitarist for the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was born on April 2, 1952 in Newport, Rhode Island and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida.
Wilkeson joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1972 and remained with the band until his death in 2001. He was known for his energetic stage presence and his skillful bass playing, which helped to define the band's sound.
In addition to his work with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Wilkeson also released a solo album in 1982 entitled "Outsider" and collaborated with other artists such as Rossington Collins Band and the Allen Collins Band.
Wilkeson struggled with drug and alcohol addiction throughout his life and his health suffered as a result. He passed away on July 27, 2001 at the age of 49 due to chronic liver and lung disease. His death was a significant loss to the music world and he is remembered as a talented and influential musician.
